The DeBartolo family’s legacy of excellence began in the 1940s when Edward J. DeBartolo, Sr. would change retail forever by developing the first-ever enclosed shopping mall. By the 1970s, the Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation had achieved assets estimated at nearly $1 billion, which included the world’s largest regional shopping center at that time. Two years after going public, DeBartolo merged with Simon Property Group, Inc., uniting two of the founding families of the regional mall business and creating the largest public real estate company in North America with a total capitalization of $7.5 billion.
